Mechanism

Moist air rises, cools and condenses, releasing latent heat. Organized updrafts and downdrafts redistribute heat, moisture and momentum.

Aircraft response

Turbulence, hail, icing, lightning and wind shear can occur together. Outflow can affect an aircraft outside the visible cloud.

Context & interpretation

Development requires moisture, instability and lifting. Mature and dissipating cells have different airflow patterns; visible boundaries are not hazard boundaries.
