Mechanism
Descending air accelerates toward the surface and turns into an outward flow. Evaporative cooling can intensify the descending air; significant rain need not reach the ground.
Aircraft response
An aircraft crossing the outflow can encounter a headwind increase, a downdraft and then a tailwind. The combined vertical and horizontal changes can sharply reduce climb capability.
Context & interpretation
Dry and wet microbursts both matter. Visual precipitation is not a reliable boundary of hazardous airflow. Detection systems and approved aircraft procedures address different parts of the hazard.
