Mechanism

Inertia, aerodynamic restoring forces and damping produce characteristic modes. Longitudinal and lateral-directional motions can couple.

Aircraft response

A disturbance can decay, persist or grow. Phugoid motion exchanges speed and height; Dutch roll couples yaw and roll.

Context & interpretation

Positive static stability does not guarantee every dynamic mode is well damped. Aircraft control systems can change the effective response.
